How to tell if your baby is still hungry

Is your baby still hungry?

It’s difficult to know exactly how much milk your baby’s getting if they’re breastfeeding. If your baby appears to still be hungry after a feed, it’s natural to wonder whether they are getting enough. The answer isn’t always to give them more milk, but to work out why your baby is still hungry. This article will help you to do just that.

Is your baby still hungry?

Although every baby is different, a good indication your baby is still hungry is if they cry for a feed more often and feed for longer when you do offer them their milk.

As your baby grows, so will their appetite which can make it difficult to keep up with a feeding routine for long. At around 6 weeks of age, many babies go through a growth spurt which can mean they are hungrier for up to a week. Being prepared for this growth spurt and subsequent increase in appetite means you can simply increase the frequency or amount you feed them, and allow the pattern to settle back after a few days.

My baby is still hungry

Too early to wean

Because an increased appetite is one of the first signs a baby is ready to wean, many mums wonder whether their hungry baby is in fact ready for solids. However, weaning is not recommended until around 6 months, and definitely not before 17 weeks, because up until then, your baby's digestive system is too immature for anything more than breastmilk or infant formula.

Is it really hunger?

Some babies like to suck simply for comfort’s sake, even if they’re not hungry. Your baby is too young to differentiate between their need for food and their need for comfort. Once they learn that sucking relieves their need for food, they can confuse it and think that sucking will also relieve their need for comfort. Demanding milk may actually be a request for comfort or attention, so if your baby seems to want something and you don’t think they’re hungry, try a cuddle instead.

I've recently noticed my little one doesn't drop off for naps as easily when she isn't on the move (car or pram) lately, so was crying a lot when tired. I began feeding her regularly, up to every 1.5 - 2 hourly before I realised that she was actually falling asleep at my breast very quickly for some of them, and the way she was upset was different. Now I've found that I can put her down for a nap with her dummy and comforter when she starts getting fractious and don't feed her, and she is a lot happier. Hungry babies won't sleep but sleepy babies will feed!!

I have put my daughter also on hungry baby and the same I have noticed no difference, except she is having more poos, so maybe something good. Other people say they use baby rice, I know it is not advised till 6 months, but speak to your health visitor, hopefully you have a good one, who is not all text book!!

My daughter, at a week before 5 months, seemed really grumpy for a week or so, kept trying to eat her hand and stared at our food intently so i knew she was ready for trying something more than milk. I started with a few spoons of baby rice a couple of times a day and it totally did the trick, she was much happier. I know there has to be guidelines and recommendations but you really do have to go with your own instinct, every baby is different.

I have a 10 month old girl and was up untill last week still waking through the night every three hours for a feed ( breastfeeding) I realised this was not right and sumised my milk was not enough for her, so now she'll have at least 7oz of follow on milk at bedtime and sleep right through the night. It has taken her a bit to get used to the formula so I am also giving her gripe water untill her system gets used to it. Please comment if you have an opinion on this!

My baby is 12 weeks old now and is on formula feed as I have tried breastfeeding her after I gave birth and found out the she is not gaining weight and infact lost a lot of weight in the first 3 weeks. I decided to put her on formula feed because I dont know how much milk she is getting from me. She also satisfied now and sleeping well at night unlike before that she is really grumpy and is waking up every 2 hours when I was bteastfeeding her. She is now gaining weight fine and getting longer quick.

In reply to BT yes gripe water is great for little ones wind or i used infacol 5mins before feeding my little
boy. Breast feeding is brilliant if it works for you but I know a lot a LOT of mums, including myself who had problems with it. My son stuck his tongue to the roof of his mouth so made it near impossible, he to lost a lot of weight which is dangerous in my view. Aptamil has been perfect and really agrees with him even mixing with expressed milk when i could.

my daughter fed every 2 hours from birth, she's 15weeks now and still feeds every 2 hours during the day. She sleeps through the night ( from 10weeks) so she goes 8hours without a feed at night but can't manage it through the day.
I wouldnt wean so early as baby's gut isnt fully developed yet. Should wait at least 16-17 weeks,

My son is 14 dni.Urodzi_ quite large for the weight 4.475kg. Aptamil milk feed him. Weighs 4.5 kg. Dose of 120ml drink. He ate every 5 hours, now starts every 4 hours to eat. I'm afraid that as time begins to be more hungry and this dose may not exceed 5 bottles a day. I do not know what to do? Does it increase the dose or wait a bit?
